Often times, companies spend a great deal of time, effort,
and money creating that perfect image. They hire artists and agencies to create the materials
that they use to advertise, be it their corporate identity, website, prints ads, point of
purchase signage, etc. But they fall short of it when it comes to their application system
products.
We find that companies that create these products are many times, too close to them. After
all, this is their business. If something makes sense to them, shouldn't it therefore make
sense to the user? But in reality, much of the layout, esthetic appeal and navigation are
left to their programmers to figure out. Are they trained as artists are trained?
Like any good website or electronic product, there are three very important aspects that need
to be addressed and incorporated:
- Visual Appeal
- Good Layout
- Ease of Use
Think about it. Does your application system have any of the following?
- Is it all grey?
- Or, use colors that cause eye strain?
- Or, colors that are just obnoxious together?
- Is it difficult to navigate?
- Are your users aware of where they are within the system at all times?
- Is it consistent?
- Does it use icons?
- Does it use too many icons?
- Or, use icons that don't make sense?
- Have layouts that cause you to scroll too much?
- Reflect your company, product, or family branding?
- Does it have a system help?
- Or, online training incorporated?
Here is where an artist like Malane Newman comes in. She expertly works with the fundamental
principles of design, using her experience with type, space and color in conjunction with
placement of all of the elements, creating and defining the layouts and visual appeal. Much
of her experience with
Computer-Based Training (CBT) and
Web-Based Training (WBT) has involved
designing training on how to use application systems. And she can help you with your application
system. Bring her in on your team. Let her incorporate her experience and bring that objective
viewpoint and fresh perspective to the design of your application system.
